There’s a new DVD coming out on March 15th, that documents NASA’s Apollo missions to the moon. It sounds interesting because it combines archived film footage with recent interviews of the astronauts, giving the project a historical view with the human element and emotional impact.

The DVD, titled In the Shadow of the Moon, is a film directed by Ron Howard that was just released last year.   DVD link to amazon.com

Here’s the official product description from amazon.com:
IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON is an intimate epic, which vividly communicates the daring and the danger, the pride and the passion, of this extraordinary era in American history. Between 1968 and 1972, the world watched in awe each time an American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon. Only 12 American men walked upon it’s surface and they remain the only human beings to have stood on another world.

Now for the first, and very possibly the last time, IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON combines archival material from the original NASA film footage, much of it never before seen, with interviews with the surviving astronauts, including Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and 13), Dave Scott (Apollo 9 and 15), John Young (Apollo 10 and 16), Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 and 17), Mike Collins (Apollo 11), Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11), Alan Bean (Apollo 12), Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14), Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17). The astronauts emerge as eloquent, witty, emotional and very human.

I didn’t realize you can rent or buy movies and television shows as digital downloads from amazon.com, until I got an email from them. It’s no wonder amazon is so big. Their marketing strategy is pretty smart, and pretty simple too. Customer buys a DVD; amazon.com sends email promoting their digital download site, AmazonUnbox Video Downloads.

Larry King Live hosted Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono Lennon, and Guy Laliberte, the founder of Cirque du Soleil, and celebrated the first year anniversary of the show LOVE, the brainchild of George Harrison and Guy Laliberte, a high tech blend of modern circus theatre set to an exciting mashup of Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles.

CNN filmed the tribute show from the Beatles Revolution Lounge at the Mirage in Las Vegas last night, Tuesday June 26th. Good interview and great dialog between Paul and Ringo, and an interesting story from Olivia talking about how George and Guy came to be friends and fans of each other’s work, and combined their talents to create the LOVE show, the first of it’s kind to celebrate the art and music of the Beatles.

The soundtrack for the show features the Beatles music remixed by Sir George Martin and his son Giles, from the original Abbey Road studio master tapes. Paul and Ringo both said the sound was so clear that they could hear things they did in the studio that had been buried in their records for years. LOVE The soundtrack album has both the stereo CD and the 5.1 surround sound DVD, which does indeed sound awesome.

40 years after releasing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles are still on the charts and in the hearts of millions of fans around the world.

Paul McCartney just released his new album Memory Almost Full, and a video for the first track “Dance Tonight.” He’s also been playing some small venue gigs and just celebrated his 65th birthday.

Ringo Starr will be releasing his EMI catalog online for digital downloads this August, plus a new greatest solo hits album, “Photograph.” This is the first time any of the Beatles music or solo albums have been available as digital downloads. EMI is releasing more Beatles catalog later this year.

A double disc of John Lennon’s solo songs was just released with current artists trying to reinterpret his music on the benefit album “Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign To Save Darfur.” The proceeds go to support Amnesty International.

And Olivia Harrison, widow of former Beatle George Harrison, who succumbed to cancer on November 29, 2001, is executive producer of the reissue of the new Traveling Wilburys collection, Volumes One & Three. The Traveling Wilburys group was George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

I finally took the bait with the free offer and tried out NetFlix, the online DVD movie service. I’m pleased to tell you that so far, so good. Their DVD’s arrive quickly in the mail, and you can get them right from your mailbox because there’s no extra packaging; just the disc itself inside a cover sleeve.

Plus the company is working on online delivery. I haven’t tried their online movie viewer yet, but they say it’s just a download player with a license that comes with your membership. I went with their 3-at-a-time unlimited plan for $17.99 a month, which allows me to rotate out any three DVD’s at a time.

The return envelope is included with pre-paid postage, so when you’re done watching that movie, just pop it into the mail. In a couple of days, you have your next movie; the company just pulls the next one from your queue list. There’s all kinds of ways to browse titles too…the system builds recommendations based on the titles you select.

Another cool feature is a message system so you can trade comments with friends who also subscribe to NetFlix. My sister and I have started to write back and forth on our common love of movies, and I’ve invited other family members to join in too.

What a great way to keep in touch with all the various movie and DVD titles flooding today’s market. And I never have to step inside a Blockbuster store again!
